Google did a big update over the weekend, seems like things are basically back now, although some of sites still aren't back yet. It could be a week or more to return rankings. This happens periodically, some sites drop drastically, sometimes for 1-2 weeks. Usually they return to the original positionl

Links are still essential, and always will be I believe. Just make sure they are relevant. You also want links from quality, authoritative websites. Links from new or unranked sites may have no effect on your placement.
