Common myths are its bad to get too many links too fast and you should rotate (delete) links after a period of time.

I dont buy this.

The reasoning is simple - if a new popular website is launched, its natural all kinds of websites will link to it. Would you penalize Yahoo sports for adding a new site?

The problem is with lazy linkbuilders who get artifical links through link farms, purchasing links on unrelated domains, adding massive run of network link buying campaigns, or just trading with websites that have nothing to do with your theme.
