It is possible that if you link to sites which have been penalized you will incur a drop in your ranking.
Competitor sabotage is also a possible pitfall.
Google used to say that it wasn't possible for a competitor to harm your website. Now they say there is "almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking". That means that it 'can' be done and could pose very significant problems for you and ultimately Google.
For example, Google DOES dole out penalties for websites that have duplicate content. There is nothing stopping a malicious competitor from copying your website and submitting it to Google (along with getting some link popularity) and wait for the ensuing chaos. |
