I have a very basic question about adding keywords to a site to improve search results. I hope that I am posting in the right place. If not, please forgive me.

It may be best to use an example. Let's say that I am targeting the keywords vote and voter. I have been told that I would have to include both words on the page. My question is, since the word 'voter' includes the word 'vote' does the search engine recognize this or does it see the 'r' at the end and recognize it as a completely different word?

If that is the case, then what about punctuation? Is there any possibility that the search engine could see the text 'vote:' and not count it because of the colon?

Thanks in Advance.

Vote and Voter will be looked at as two different KWs.
The word vote: would be looked at as if the colon was not there.
